A Norm Transformed by Media

Macho culture derives from a hyper masculine stereotype, that creates environments that in many cases are toxic for both men and women, restricting the individual ambition of what we can be. For this project we wanted to focus on how macho culture affects men and how representation in media reinforces these norms. We analysed the visual content of three different local newspapers, a total of 15 magazines, with a focus on identifying macho culture. By going through our analyses, we identified attributes and norms that were recurring in all the papers that together build the masculine man that is being featured. We chose some images from these papers that we thought were representative of these norms to deconstruct, intervene, and hack. The result; a reactional paper.
